Government Targets too High?

New targets to improve the productivity, efficiency and sustainability of the UK's construction sector were unveiled by the Government and industry earlier this month.

Targets include 230,000 additional trained construction workers and an extra 13,500 apprenticeship placements by 2010, a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste to landfill, an increase in 'responsible sourcing' and mandatory biodiversity surveys for all projects over £1m
.

Whether this is achievable, or even desirable, is another matter and in a month in which Government targets on Part L revisions up to 2012 have got CAB Technical Officer David Earle spitting blood, one wonders if the powers that be are starting to go a bit off-beam.

Congratulations this month to Alumet, already winner of The Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2004 and since gone from strength to strength cumulating in the £500k investment of the new 10,000 sq ft Innovation Centre, officially opened by HRH The Duke of Kent at the end of June.

CHIEF EXEC'S COMMENT

Platform for Sustainable Future

Justin Ratcliffe
The midpoint of the year is for many trade associations time for reflection on the past year with the onset of AGM’s and in CAB’s case an Annual Review and Sustainability Report. In the current climate of worldwide economic uncertainty it is a brave man who predicts the future and for the present, focus for CAB is service and added value – in many cases this means laying the groundwork or platform for members to build upon.

• Now - 2.2 • 2010 - 1.5 • 2013 - 1.1 • 2016/2018 - 0.7 the non dwelling sector lagging slightly.

Council for Aluminium in Building

The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
