Smart,
Strong & Sustainable
The
third CAB Annual Technical Conference again proved popular with members
with more than 130 people attending a varied and informative programme.
A wide range of topics were introduced and discussed all of which were
relevant to today's aluminium supply chain. Presentations were offered
by independent consultants and CAB members experienced in specific topics.
The conference was once again organised by David Earle, CAB's Technical
Officer, who promoted this regular event as one opportunity for members
to keep up to date with the developments in the construction sector.
Opening the conference was Ant Wilson of Faber Maunsell, consultants
to the Government for the Conservation of Fuel and Power Building Regulations
review. His presentation covered the existing regulations in detail
and, most importantly for the delegates, explained how this area will
develop in future years. Mo Panam, joint MD of powder coaters Barley
Chalu, member of the Qualicoat technical group and one of the industry's
leading experts explained the steps necessary to achieve a high quality
and long lasting finish on aluminium products.

Closing
the morning's session was Phil Brown of Pilkington's European standards
team, who, among other specialised glass products, introduced a recently
developed vacuum glazed unit which offers very low U values. In light
of projected further reductions in permissible U values for new buildings,
this will help window manufacturers meet the new standards.
The afternoon's presentations began with an overview of the correct
selection of fixings and fasteners by Robin Szymura of specialists SFS
intec. Correct selection is crucial in today's high performance facades
where performance and low maintenance are required.

legislative area.
