All Quiet on the Moors

Peace and quiet on a new housing development is being maintained- despite its abutment by a main railway line- by openings in windows.

McInerney Homes sold all 24 apartments on its 71-home Heritage site between Upper Hopton and Lower Hopton on the outskirts of Leeds as soon as the block was complete and before other homes on the site had been released. Each of the apartments features Passivent TVES4DB acoustic window vents, specifically chosen to help maximise energy efficiency within and simultaneously minimise noise disturbance from the railway line which runs behind the apartment block, and the road which runs alongside it.

A total 180 vents have been incorporated into the window frames throughout the single apartment block, to help supplement the heat recovery system installed in the apartments and provide Regulatory levels of background ventilation. The vents automatically and silently open and close in response to changes in humidity levels inside, and moderate external noise penetrating the home. The vents require no electricity to function, and each provide 27600mm2 ventilation area and 39dB acoustic attentuation.

Passivent has designed the vents to operate only when conditions demand, helping minimise ingress of unnecessary cold external air, and that when operating, incoming air is directed upwards to avoid draughts and gently mix with the warmer internal air.

Steven Noon, for McInerney Homes, commented, ‘The Passivent vents helped us meet planning requirements for both background ventilation and noise attenuation. The siting off the apartment block meant we didn't want to have too many fans through the walls by the railway to vent the heat recovery system. The Passivent vents have helped us minimise the number of façade penetrations, yet ensure both heat and ventilation work effectively.’

In addition to trickle ventilators Passivent supplies the Fresh range of through wall ventilators, plus BBA- certified 'whole house' natural (PIV) and mechanical (iMEV) ventilation solutions, with or without acoustic options. All of these contribute towards efficient ventilation of the home with little or no energy consumption. Passivent is part of the Building Product Design Group, which specialises in developing innovative yet practical ventilation and roofing products in line with changing market requirements.
