Aluminium
& Sustainability
The
Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) has recently launched a new
report titled 'Aluminium & Sustainability - A Cradle to Cradle Approach'.
The report offers fabricators a reference source when in discussion
with specifiers and contractors and covers the production lifecycle
of aluminium from the raw material, Bauxite, to the finished product.
The recycling of aluminium is also explained in detail and the fact
that we are building up a bank of aluminium for future use because aluminium
has a highly commercial end-of-life scrap value and can be virtually
recycled indefinitely without loss of any properties.
75% of all the aluminium produced since 1880 is still in use today
The report was presented to the press at RIBA HQ in London early in
October.
Speaking at the launch was: the Chief Executive of CAB, Justin Ratcliffe;
Professor Michael Stacey, of Nottingham University and of Michael Stacey
Architects, and David Earle, CAB Technical Officer.
CAB have worked closely with the International Aluminium Institute (IAI)
and the European Aluminium Association (EAA) to substantiate the contents
of the report which is now freely available in hardcopy and can also
be downloaded from the CAB website http://www.c-a-b.org.uk
CAB is available to offer guidance to fabricators and specifiers on
the use of sustainable aluminium in construction. CAB is also keen to
emphasise the value of membership of the association, whether a company
works with aluminium or is a provider to the supply chain. Further information
can be obtained by contacting Julie Harley at the CAB office on 01453
