Package Encloses Applied Enterprise Centre
The construction of an important new vocational training centre in the
north of England has demonstrated the comprehensive nature of the glazing
solutions available from Fendor and is the first major contract to feature
the manufacturer's new aluminium framed system.
The
Unity City Academy on the Ormesby Road in Middlesbrough has had the
new facility constructed alongside it by GB Building Solutions with
Halliday Clark being the lead design consultant on the project. It is
one of the first of a new style of training resource for young people,
called an Applied Enterprise Centre, and offers vocational training
in skills such as motor mechanics and the building trades.
An approved aluminium framed system was employed by Fendor to clad the
main external elevations of the two storey college building; providing
high energy performance, low maintenance and an attractive appearance
while also offering speed of enclosure so that other works could continue
internally.
The project architect for Halliday Clark, Andrew Southey, comments:
'This new vocational training facility at the Unity City Academy has
been funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
‘The budget constraints on the project meant that we had to go
for a medium level specification, while still achieving a range of stringent
performance criteria. These included high energy ratings for the aluminium
curtain walling and a 30 minute fire rating for the screens in the atrium
which forms the point of escape for the building. Fendor's package was
all delivered well and we had no problems with it.’
The aluminium framed system has been used to create 1100 mm high ribbon
windows for many of the classrooms, while one of the elevations features
an area of curtain walling rising to roof height. This sits on the concrete
slab and is then fixed to a steel channel at the head. Where it is tied
into the intermediate floor, green coloured spandrel panels are included
to obscure the edge of the slab.
While Fendor's FineLine system was used for the fire rated glazing,
the company's package also included a number of 'punched' windows and
aluminium framed escape doors.
