Corporate Manslaughter Act Coming Soon

Shocking news this month from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) which recently raided over 1000 construction sites throughout the UK and was forced to close nearly a third of them down due to unacceptably low site safety. Nearly 400 enforcement notices were served. We also report this month on a series of seminars on Coprorate Manslaughter being given by the NHBC - coinciding with the arrival of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act on 6th April 2008.

Whatever your views on climate change, it does make sense for multinational companies to chip in some of their wealth and resources to invesitigate it. Not least because they might find some bauxite under the North Pole, I hear you thinking, but whatever the motive, Alcoa has committed 15 of its employees worldwide to its Earthwatch Institute.

More positive news from the aluminium glazing sector this month, with an upbeat report from Robert Palmer, which shows that we are in the midst of a boom, but with less good times ahead. With the industry still expanding, naturally its trade association also has to expand. And indeed, the CAB has just announced that it is appointing a new Technical Support Officer. The CAB will also be holding a Technical Conference on 14th May, which is open to both members and non-members.

Finally, Hydro has woken up to the fact that it is an alumnium company, having divested its polymer and energy assets over the past 18 months, and is excited at the prospect: 'Aluminium is steadily attracting new supporters and areas of application', a statement says.

CHIEF EXEC'S COMMENT

Marketing to Specifiers

Justin Ratcliffe
An interesting first quarter with expansion very much to the fore with the announcement that we will be recruiting a Technical Support Officer to add to the current team. On the marketing front our 'Marketing to Specifiers' Conference last month highlighted the increasing need to involve specifiers at the very earliest stage of a project and provide them with quality information. CPD seminars such as CAB's 'Aluminium in Construction' series were identified as a major opportunity in this respect.

Council for Aluminium in Building

The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
