Weathering the Storm

A month is a long time in the construction industry - and even longer in politics. Those shocked by the catastrophic demise of the PM's fortunes in recent weeks, may be even more shocked at the apparent collapse of the housing - and housebuilding - markets.

When the house price index drops half a percent, newspapers run sensational headlines about bankrupt Britain which so far we have taken with a pinch of salt. However, the fact remains that we have a number of influential reports in this month's issue which do not make comfortable reading.

On the plus side the architectural market remains buoyant for the moment and some big projects such the Glass Shard seems to be struggling gradually into life with the support of foreign money and the appointment of new project management team.

It's too early to call how things are going to look next month: but barring any more financial or political blunders the industry can hopefully weather the storm.

CHIEF EXEC'S COMMENT

CAB’s Networking and Partnering Opportunities

Justin Ratcliffe
On several occasions I have commented that the health of a trade association is based as much on member involvement as it is on membership numbers. A high level of involvement can lead to both innovation and exciting opportunities. While our important technical work continues to expand, we have also focused on providing added value through a range of marketing activities and through our major Regional Events programme which brings members together from across the supply chain.

Council for Aluminium in Building

The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
